Post-traumatic Growth

You’ve heard of post-traumatic stress disorder but probably haven’t heard about post-traumatic growth.

The old adage, “what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger”, apparently has truth behind it. Studies have shown that people are able to not only deal with trauma, but actually come out of it better than before.

And, surprisingly, a lot of people can do this. In fact, the percentage of people who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder is a fraction of those who grow from the trauma experienced.

The secret lies in how the trauma is viewed internally – the mental map we make of the situation. Those who grow from their trauma have a positive mindset and are able to find the opportunities the new situation has brought them. They are forward thinking and don’t get stuck in lamenting the occurred.

It’s not a question of ignoring the pain of the loss or tragedy experienced or to not prefer it hadn’t happened. It’s about accepting the event and using the power of the experience to reach new heights and discover untapped resources in ourselves.
